Usually, I’m writing stories about other people, but here’s where I tell mine. My name is Laney and I was born in Pensacola, Florida. I moved all over the state before starting my college education — and first journalism stint — at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.
As a freshman, I was an English major and barely knew what journalism was. But after just a semester of working for my school’s student newspaper, I had changed my major and found my passion. I took a year off from school and worked at several papers in North Carolina, as a reporter for Watauga Democrat, Avery Journal Times, Mountain Times as well as the interimĀ editor of Hickory Daily Record.
I transferred to Boston University in fall 2016, and am now a senior. I founded an investigative team at the Daily Free Press and am currently interning for WGBH’s Morning Edition. Starting this January, I will work asĀ a Boston Globe metro correspondent.
After graduation, I hope to pursue my love of telling stories. Particularly, I hope to work in investigative reporting and public radio.
